Teacher of the Year 2010
|
|
|
 |
Leah King
2010 Teacher of the Year
|
|
Each year
faculty members have the task of choosing from among their ranks one
educator who stands out, who epitomizes the tenets of an educator, who
strives to be the best even in the worst of times, and one who, they
feel, will represent them in a positive fashion. Being selected as the
Teacher of the Year is respected by fellow educators and is coveted and
desired.
Fourth District’s Teacher of the Year loves
children and does what it takes, regardless of the sacrifice, to make
things happen in a positive way. Her demeanor with children is
commendable as she works with them individually and in groups. She is
respectful to each child, never raising her voice while making her
point. She can be seen teaching from all areas of the room including the
floor. With colleagues, she maintains the same positive and caring
attitude. She understands that teaching children requires talent,
knowledge, respect, understanding, and lots of love for them and the
profession.
Fourth District
Elementary School is proud to announce
that Leah King, second grade teacher, has been selected as the 2010 Fourth District Elementary School Teacher of the Year.
Though Mrs. King transferred to Appling County Primary School for the
2009-2010 school year, she is still part of the Fourth District family
and an outstanding representative for the school.
She is,
indeed, a teacher to be admired, respected, and honored. |

"Pulling for Kids" Awards |
 |
Based entirely on the principal's subjective analysis of a
teacher's commitment to students, this annual award, first
given during the 2001-2002 school year, goes beyond other
competitive state and national awards in that it offers
recognition at the school site for those things that the
principal observes throughout the year which considers the
child first and places his or her academic, social, and
emotional well-being at the forefront of the school day.
|
The award recognizes outstanding achievement and offers
teachers and their colleagues positive, on-site examples of
what the profession is all about while helping to ensure
that students, regardless of their capability, are subjected
to the very best that the profession can offer. This award,
although totally subjective, provides another medium through
which teachers receive positive recognition for their
achievement. |

Each year, I have the
privilege of choosing from among the faculty, persons who, I feel, have
been exemplary in working well with students to ensure that they become
their very best. It takes a special person to do the things that
teachers do each day with a group of children who need guidance, focus,
understanding, love, compassion, and tolerance. Academics are only one
part of the day for the teacher while he or she provides a path of
excellence for each student. Children from different backgrounds,
interests, academic levels, motivation, attention level, and discipline
are thrust into a classroom with others who will share one, some, or
none of the characteristics with their classmates. Bringing it all
together for success offers the teacher challenges and opportunities.
Two
professionals, selected this year to receive the Pulling for Kids Award,
share enthusiasm for students, a do-whatever-it-takes attitude, a
willingness to encourage relentlessly, a proven record of success, a
positive attitude, attention to detail, and an undying energy for
children and what is right, just, legal, and expected. One is the
teacher of the very young, and she begins her day early and ends it
late. She’s not a complainer; she’s a doer, an encourager, a supporter,
and a professional. The other is the one who shares a child’s sorrows
and successes; she’s the one who ensures that children are protected at
home and at school; she’s the one who takes her position seriously and
tackles even the difficult issues. Both are caring by nature, and both
enjoy their jobs and strive each day to be better than the day before.
It really
isn’t difficult from this administrator’s perspective to determine the
Pulling for Kids Award winners. Each day, I visit classrooms to observe
the wonderful talents of dedicated professionals engaged in teaching
children. At the end of each year, I recognize faculty and staff members
with a Pulling for Kids Award for those who repeatedly step above and
beyond expectations on children’s behalf moving children forward in the
educational continuum. With the school’s long running achievement as a
Title I Distinguished School and having achieved a long-running,
consecutive success rate with Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), it’s a
matter of which among our excellent staff deserves a little additional
recognition. Others have been named in the past, and these two educators
join the ranks of exceptional educators who have put themselves second
so that a child could experience success first. It is with great
pleasure that I recognize Mrs. Kandiss Miles, guidance counselor, and
Mrs. Christy Tillman, Pre-K teacher, as recipients of the Pulling for
Kids Award for the 2008 – 2009 school year. Thank you again, Mrs. Miles
and Mrs. Tillman, for accepting the challenge and doing it with such
professionalism. You join a select group of educators who look beyond
excuses to find excellence. |
