The Governor’s Office
of Student Achievement notified Dr. Lynn Overstreet, principal of Fourth
District Elementary, by letter and congratulated him for the school
earning the 2009 Single Statewide Accountability System (SSAS) award.
Kathleen Mathers, Executive Director, states, in part, “Your hard work
and that of your students, faculty, and community has earned your school
a silver award for making great gains in student achievement.” Further,
she states that “SSAS competition for a silver award in the greatest
gains category is impressive.”
Schools must meet
three criteria in order to win the award: (1) Make Adequate Yearly
Progress (AYP) for two consecutive years. (Fourth District has made AYP
for eight, consecutive years.); (2) Demonstrate that at least 25% of
students exceed standards in all test areas as measured by state
assessments; and (3) Place in the 96th percentile or higher
statewide in greatest student achievement gains. Fourth District
Elementary School is one of only 13 elementary schools in the state of
Georgia to receive this award for the 2008 – 2009 school year.
Dr. Overstreet commends
the students, faculty, and staff for their commitment to excellence and
congratulates them on winning this prestigious award. Fourth District
students attend one of the best elementary schools in the state where
children come first in an academic, safe, and nurturing environment.
Currently, Fourth District is recognized as a Title 1 Distinguished
School and the recipient of two, State Superintendent’s Distinguished
Achievement Awards for improvement on the Grade 5 science and Grade 4
